The Beginning of Division III

It all started in 1973 at a convention

College athletics have been around for over 150 years and within that span of time, the landscape has changed dramatically. The most seismic shift happened on August 6, 1973 when an NCAA special convention met to address the level of competition among the schools lumped into the University and College divisions within the association.

Large differences in resources necessitated a change to standard procedure and with that the division model was born within the NCAA, creating Divisions I, II, and III. All three were and are different but the one we really care about is DIII so that’s where we’ll head.
