Season Milestones

Offense Success Rate

  1. North Central (IL), 68.7

  2. Gustavus Adolphus, 63.9

  3. Union (NY), 63.5

  4. Wis.-Platteville, 63.4

  5. Heidelberg, 63.2

  6. Mount Union, 61.7

  7. MIT, 60.6

  8. Randolph-Macon, 60.0

  10. Belhaven, 58.1

Offense Success Rate (OSR) measures the how effective a team is at gaining yardage on downs, enough to be “successful.” A team is successful on a down of they do the following:

Gain 50% of yards on first down (ex: six yards on first and 10)

Gain 70% of yards on second down

Gain 100% of downs on third and fourth down

The above numbers are derived from Football Outsiders and the difference between downs is based on lots of research. OSR allows for a more granular look at teams, not just how they do on third down or any specific situation but a blanket measurement that takes into account how a team performs on all downs. Like any stat, it is not perfect but offers a great snapshot.
