D3 Football's Toughest Roads to Success

For many, August is the month when time moves slowest as the football season is right around the corner but not quite here yet. That is true at every level of the sport from the NFL down to high school.

For our purposes, the show is DIII football and we are ready for football season to just be here already but unfortunately we have to wait just like everyone else. Until kickoff though, there are things to talk about and one of those is the projected strength of schedule for each DIII football program going into the 2023 season.

Our strength of schedule ratings are based on the Simple Rating System (SRS) that takes into account margin of victory (MOV) and strength of schedule (SOS). Strength of schedule is determined by calculating all opponents SRS through thousands of calculations and then averaging them.

To come to our 2023 SOS ratings we took the averaged SRS ratings of each team’s opponents for 2021 and 2022 to project their performance this season. Not a foolproof plan but still a decent method.
